The surprise in the welcome home

Rev Tara Curlewis Genesis 32:22-31 Matthew 14:13-21

We heard about Jacob - he had had an interesting life, struggles, wrestled with God, cheated his brother from his inheritance and conned Laban.  Jacob is now returning home - he is uncertain of the welcome that he  will receive.  He struggles, an unexpected night by the river changes his experience - he is confronted with his struggles and the need to be reconciled with Esau and God.
We all know Esau runs out and embraces Jacob - May we welcome others into this place as God Welcomes us Home.

The Power of Praise

Rev Frank Van Der Korput preaches on Acts 16 & Joshua 6

This Sunday we welcomed visiting minister Rev Frank Van Der Korput who has been the Chaplain over at Northaven for the past 8 years.  The readings are from Acts 16: 11-12, 19b-28 and Joshua 6: selected verses from 6-27.   Frank's sermon focused on the thought that there is power in singing and praise - 'praise brings life' - singing changes the brain it is known that hormones are released that reduce anxiety and stress. The phrase 'Sing Praise' occurs in the Bible over 50 times. Singing brings us community with others, we are designed by God to sing even before we were born. When we sing praise we put our faith in God, it's not just filling space in the service - Paul & Silas knew & their singing saved not only them but also the Philippian jailer and his family. Praising God helps us to get through our days, doors will be opened, sometimes it's a shout, sometimes only a whisper.

Reflection on the parable of the weeds

Jon Humphries Ps 139:1-12, 23-24 Matt 13:24-30, 36-43

With Rev Tara away for a couple of weeks on leave, we enjoyed having Jon Humpries in our pulpit.  Jon focused on the Matthew reading, The Parable of the Weeds - bringing in a mirror to highlight that Jesus uses this parable while talking to his own community of followers, for 'us' to take a good look at ourselves, to identify, or even recognise our weeds, rather than judging others and who gets in or out of heaven.   It's the little things, the small things we do every day that defines us, who we are, our moral imagination, our creative compassion.

Minister: Rev Jon Humphries

Readings: Psalm 139:1-12, 23-24 and Matthew 13:24-30, 36-43
